President Job Description

The role generally involves leading the team and making sure everyone is getting on with and is supported in their respective roles.

Specific roles include:

  • Attending faculty meetings to make sure any changes to the curriculum or to the medical school structure are done in the best interests of students.
  • Represent Bristol Medical School at national meetings about issues affecting medical students.
  • Chairing the regular Galenicals meetings to ensure all committee members are doing their jobs and have sufficient support in their roles.
  • Forwarding on any information/questions/queries etc to the relevant committee member.
  • Organising events to inform students about issues that concern them.

Committees that you sit on and frequency of meetings:

  • CTC (Central Teaching Committee): meets once a month to discuss curriculum
issues and proposed changes. Your opinion is highly valued and you play an active
    role.

  • MEC (Medical Education Committee): a larger group, meets about once every 2
months, deals with important issues raised at CTC as well as more general education
issues. Again your opinion is highly valued.

  • SSC committee: discusses issues with SSCs in the curriculum. Approves applications
for SSCs outside the local area. A small committee in which you have an active role.
    Meets 3-4 times a year.

  • AMG (Academy Management Group): monthly meeting with the Academy Deans
to discuss issues arising within Academies. Clinical VP usually attends this meeting.

  • Faculty board: a large committee with all the important members of the medical
school. Meet 3 times a year and discuss all current issues in the medical school. You
    play an active role.

If you are unable to attend the above meetings, spread them amongst the VPs who are
    there to support you.

  • APR (Annual Programme Review): happens once a year in July to summarise the
year. The most important meeting of the year that you HAVE to attend, along with the
VPs. Gives a good insight into the decisions made about medical education at Bristol.

  • UK Foundation Programme Office (UKFPO) medical students board: now meets
just once a year in London to discuss and identify problems with the foundation
programme application process (FPAS). Last year’s President accompanies you, plus
there are representatives from every medical school in the country which makes for
an enjoyable day. This year a second meeting was organised to review the Parallel
Recruitment Exercise (PRE) that 5th years took park in to pilot the Situational
    Judgment Test (SJT).

  • SSLC (Staff Student Liaison Committee): termly meeting with the welfare reps and
the year reps, plus individuals who have particular issues with areas of the curriculum.

You also regularly get asked to attend other random meetings. For me this year these
have included 5th year group, 3rd year group (which the 3rd year representative has
attended), a balance of neurology teaching within the curriculum meeting and an
    eSSC workshop.
