Elections 2012: Vice President Preclinical Welfare

Jess Little

Jess Little

Hello I’m Jess and I want to make the pre-clinical years the best they can be!

The pre-clinical years can be quite daunting and I’d like to be there to help with any issues that arise along the way. I’m an approachable person, will listen to your concerns and help you work through your worries.

If elected I would arrange:

1) *SUPPORT FOR RE-SITS*
- Set up revision sessions near re-sit times so no student is left worrying alone – Help students find out where they went wrong in their exams so they know where to improve

2) *INTERCALATOR MUMs and DADs*
- Set up parents across all intercalation subjects and have a meet and greet in October

3) *EARLY CAREERS INFO*
- Provide information on what can be done to boost your medical CV early on in the course when there is still plenty of time to act

Thank-you

Hello everyone, my name’s Tom O’Hagan and I’m running for Pre-Clinical Welfare.
I believe the transition to university life in first year is one of the biggest challenges to one’s psyche. New environment, new people, isolation from home life are all potentially detrimental to overall wellbeing. I personally felt lost as just another candidate number. It is vital for there to be a supportive network of students and staff.

I am very enthusiastic about mental health and would be excited to be involved in a society that can help to maintain happiness and welfare. I believe many solutions to problems are simple, and I hope to address these with my aims below:
• Continue and develop Mums and Dads scheme and Medics’ Fresh.
• Improved integration of years and shared knowledge via student talks.
• Personally listen to any concerns, no matter how small.

Thank you.

Hello! I have thought about whether I could do this role since my pre clinical years, when unexpected challenges faced me with welfare issues. I believe
pre-clinical years are particularly tough and the way they are structured, although essential, faces many students with problems. I want to be your welfare
representative as I am organised and proactive but mainly my desire is because I care and want to listen.

• I have experience of leadership through captaining the university netball 1sts
as well as a strong belief in medic life having taken part in medics choir and the
revues. My main campaign points are:

• Improved interaction with clinical years to gain understanding of future life as a clinical years medical student
• Improved welfare guidance and advice for potential intercalators Expansion of the welfare website, so first hand advice can be accessed from the security of your desk.

Lucy Clark

My Name is Lucy Clark and I want to be your pre-clinical welfare officer!
I’ve had some great ideas which I think could make a real difference to the experience of going though those first two years which can be both intimidating
and challenging! For example:

1) To work with the faculty to simplify communication by consolidating all the essential information and dates into one ‘academic planner’ given to each
student, containing all the key dates and contact details for staff, doing away with the piles of handbooks.
2) Work with the faculty to develop the new ‘tutoring scheme’ bringing in my experiences from my previous degree. I would push for termly tutorials
where essential skills can be practiced and allow student to voice concerns and get support before it’s too late.
3) Maintain the current ‘Mum’s and Dad’s’ scheme, but also add the provision of an intercalator mentoring scheme to aid students by giving real ‘insider’ information.

Thanks
Lucy Clark
